What is a Wedding Flat Lay?

Wedding flat lays are where all the details are curated and photographed from above. They are a beautiful way to capture your wedding details along with showcasing the theme colors and accessories. A flat lay photo culminates these details and gives a sense of the mood and narrative of the wedding day, all in one image.

Items to Include

We always have our own styling kit on hand, but to give your details that extra edge we always recommend setting a few things aside for the big day. We always recommend having your details organized together in an easy to location spot such as a shoebox, so the photographer to save time during the wedding day. This way we can take detail photos without having to interrupt any hair and makeup preparations.

Here are some items we recommend including:

  • Your invitation suite-2 copies if possible!

  • Save the dates

  • All the rings - wedding bands and engagement ring

  • Any jewelry you plan on wearing - necklaces, earrings, bracelets

  • Ring box (if you have one, if not we have some neutral-toned ones we bring along)

  • Vow books

  • Perfume

  • Any sentimental items

  • Shoes

  • Vintage stamps and wax seals

  • Your bouquet

  • Veil

  • Ring dishes, swatches, ribbons, trinkets, family heirlooms, handwritten love notes, vintage family photos, etc.

  • Any religious items you would like to include (rosaries, Kiddush cups, etc.)

Added Florals

It can be great to add some extra petals, florals or greenery your florist may have. It can be as simple as asking your florist a few days ahead of the wedding if they could leave a few extra blooms and greens to use for the detail flat lay. They usually love doing this since it can be great content for them to share on Instagram.

For the Minimalists

When it comes to flat lays, sometimes less is more. A minimalistic flat lay creates a sense of elegance and sophistication. If done wrong, a photo that is over-styled can appear tacky, while a simple and minimalistic photo can have a timeless and refined look. We like to incorporate fruits from the surroundings, stems and greenery from the florist or other meaningful mementos into our photos. These items can add a unique touch of personalization to the photographs and help to tell the story of the couple or wedding location.

Get that Sparkle

Cleaning your engagement ring before taking photos of it is important for a few reasons. A clean ring will sparkle and shine. Often dirt and grime from everyday wear can make a ring look dull and worn.

There are a few ways to clean your engagement ring before taking photographs. One method is to use a mild detergent and warm water to gently scrub the ring. However, we highly recommend using a jewelry cleaning solution specifically designed for diamonds or precious metals. It is important to remember to not use harsh chemicals, as they can damage the ring.

For the Gentlemen

We love to highlight the groom’s details too! Items like shoes, watches, cufflinks, tie/bowtie, cologne, and your boutonniere reflect your personal style and add unique touches to men’s wedding flat lays.

In Conclusion

In the end, details shots may not be the most important thing to capture on the wedding day but they certainly are fun to put together and they are great to include in an album! Don’t stress too much and let us take care of the design, while you finalize getting ready.
